- מַעֲזִיבָהf. (עזב, v. infra) a concrete of stone chippings. clay , used for paving floors, pavement covering the ceiling (תִּקְרָה) of the lower story and serving as flooring to the upper story. B. Mets. X, 2 התחתון … העליון את המ׳ the dweller below must provide the ceiling, and the one above the pavement. Ib. 117a מ׳ אחזוקיוכ׳ the plaster preserves the ceiling (thus benefitting the owner of the lower story); (oth. opin.) מ׳ אשווייוכ׳ it serves only to level the floor. Succ.I, 7 תקרה שאין עליה מ׳ a ceiling not covered with pavement; a. fr.עזב, Neh. 3, 8 is supposed to mean: to form a concrete for fortification purposes.Our w. seems to be a hebraization of מלט caementum (v. P. Sm. 2137), by confounding it with h. r. מָלַט; cmp. הִימְלְטָא a. מַלְטֵט.
